Abstract. Purpose:To report prognostic factors in open injury to the eyeglobe. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 84 eyes of 84 cases who were treated by us during the past 10 years. The series comprised 71 males and 13 females. Almost all the cases were treated on the same day of injury. Prognostic factors were analyzed based on classification by Ocular Trauma Classification Group(1997)regarding depth of injury, size of corneal injury, and presence of retinal detachment. Results:The present series was characterized by injury during work-related accidents and involvement of males in the sixth decade of life. Final visual acuity tended to be poor when the injury was located deeper in the eyeglobe, when corneal injury was greater than 1.5 mm,and when retinal detachment was present. Conclusion:Classification by Ocular Trauma Classification Group promises to be of value in assessing visual outcome in open injury to the eyeglobe.
