Abstract. Purpose:To report the long-term outcome of photodynamic therapy(PDT)for exudative age-related macular degeneration(AMD). Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 42 eyes of 42 patients who received PDT for AMD and who were followed up for 4 years or longer. The series comprised 36 males and 6 females. The age ranged from 50 to 86 years, average 71 years. AMD in the strict sense was present in 28 eyes and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV)in 14 eyes. Results:Visual acuity improved or remained unchanged in 31 eyes(74%)after one year and in 25 eyes(61%)after 4 years. There was no difference in the outcome between PVD and AMD in the strict sense(p>0.05). Recurrence within 6 months after PDT was more frequent in eyes with AMD in the strict sense than PCV(p=0.047). Conclusion:PDT induces improvement or maintenance of visual acuity in many eyes with AMD after one year and in lesser number of eyes after 4 years. The findings seem to suggest that PDT may be less effective for AMD in the Japanese than in Caucasians.
