Purpose:To evaluate the effect of photodynamic therapy(PDT)for exudative age-related macular degeneration. Cases and Method:This retrospective study comprised 48 eyes of 47 patients. Their age ranged from 51 to 87 years, average 70 years. Results:Three months after PDT,neovascularization disappeared in 15 eyes(31%)when evaluated by ICG angiography. Dye leakage decreased or disappeared in 24 eyes(50%)when evaluated by fluorescein angiography. Macular edema disappeared in 26 eyes(54%)when seen by optical coherence tomography(OCT). Eighteen eyes had to receive another session of PDT. Laser photocoagulation was performed on 2 eyes. Triamcinolone was injected into the Tenon capsule in one eye. After an average of 8.9months following PDT,visual acuity improved in 38%,remained the same in 50%,and deteriorated in 13%. Conclusion:PDT may induce decreased macular edema and stabilization of exudative changes. Prevention of recurrence and measures for ineffective cases remain major problems.
