Abstract. Background:Organic solvents are mainly used in glue sniffing and may contain toluene, xylene and, occasionally, methanol. Purpose:To report toxic optic neuropathy in a case with past history of glue sniffing. Case:A 24-year-old male presented with loss of vision since the previous day. He had the habit of glue sniffing for 6 years until 8 months before. He was engaged in removing painting from cars using organic solvent for 3 days until 6 days before. Findings:Both eyes had no light perception, were mydriatic and lacked light reflex. The fundus showed normal findings. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed high response in deep cerebral cortex characteristic for toluene poisoning. Pulsed corticosteroid treatment resulted in improved visual acuity to hand motion 10 days later and to 0.02 8 weeks later. Conclusion:Toxic optic neuropathy may develop after passive inhalation of organic solvents in a person with past habit of glue sniffing.
