Abstract. Purpose:To review the low-vision care in our institution and certification of visually handicapped status. Cases:This review was made on 62 patients who received low-vision care during the past 3 years. Results:There were 33 males and 29 females. The age ranged from 31 to 95 years, average 71 years. Visual impairment was due to diabetic retinopathy in 19 cases and to glaucoma in 12 cases. Thirty persons had already been certified as visually handicapped at the start of low-vision care. Six of them necessitated a change in grading later. Thirty-two persons applied for and were certified as visually handicapped after low-vision care. At the final evaluation,20 persons were identified as grade 2 and 19 persons as grade 5. Conclusion:Numerous senile persons applied for certificate as visually handicapped. Personnels in eye clinics ought to supply information to the eventual applicants for certification.
