Abstract. Purpose:To report the visual outcome of photodynamic therapy(PDT)for age-related macular degeneration(AMD). Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 115 eyes of 112 patients with AMD. The series comprised 86 male eyes and 29 female eyes. The age ranged from 50 to 86 years, average 72 years. Soft drusen was present in 22 eyes and adsent in 93 eyes. Visual acuity was evaluated in terms of logMAR. Difference in 0.3 or over was judged as improvement or deterioration. All the cases were followed up for 6 months or longer regarding frequency of PDT, size of macular lesion, and choroidal circulatory disorder. Results:Final visual acuity deteriorated in 7 out of 22 eyes(32%)with drusen and in 14 out of 93 eyes(15%)without. The difference was significant(p<0.04). Eyes without soft drusen showed a tendency for visual acuity to remain unchanged or to improve after PDT. There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding other factors. Conclusion:Presence of soft drusen in AMD affects the visual outcome after PDT.
