Abstract. We recorded posterior pole electroretinogram(ppERG)in human eyes. Following light adaptation for 10 minutes,ERG was recorded by presenting light stimulus on a hexagonal,40-degree cathode ray display(CRT)terminal. We used three stimulus modes:double flash(A),single flash(B)and delayed single flash(C). The value[A-(B+C)]was defined as the nonlinear component(NLC). Three linear components were present in ppERG ie early positive wave(p),negative wave(q),and late positive wave(r). We applied the ppERG to 10 normal eyes and 10 eyes with diabetic retinopathy. Eyes with preproliferative retinopathy showed significantly reduced amplitude of nonlinear components for(p-q),(q-r),and single flash(B)than normal eyes. The ppERG is easy to elicit and record. The nonlinear components of ppERG are based on a simple algorithm. The present method promises to be of value in the analysis of visual functions in diabetic retinopathy.
