Abstract. We reviewed 16 eyes in 15 patients of bacterial endophthalmitis following cataract surgery seen during 7 years 3 months at the Kumamoto University Hospital. There were 2 eyes of rupture of posterior capsule and one eye each of aqueous leakage and incarceration of iris into the surgical wound. The interval between cataract surgery and endophthalmitis ranged from 2 days to 12 months, average 2.7 months. Vitrectomy was performed on 15 eyes. The interval between onset of endophthalmitis and vitrectomy ranged from day zero to 11 months, average 1.1 months. The final visual acuity was below 0.1 in 6 eyes, between 0.1 and 0.4 in 5 eyes, and 0.5 or over in 5 eyes. Causative organism was isolated from 4 eyes of 4 patients. They comprised one eye each of spore-forming bacillus,Micrococcus sp.,Propionibacterium acnes and Acinetobacter lwoffi.
