Abstract. We treated 15 eyes of 15 patients of retinal vein occlusions with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The series comprised central retinal vein occlusion 3 eyes and branch retinal vein occlusion 12 eyes. The ages ranged from 37 to 76 years, average 58.5±10.5 years. All the eyes had macular edema by funduscopy or fluorescein angiography. Another series of 12 eyes with similar findings served as control. Hyperbaric oxygen was applied for 1 hour to be repeated for 10 consecutive days. Some patients received the same treatment twice. The therapeutic effect was evaluated by visual acuity 6 months later. The outcome was independent of duration between onset and start of therapy. The effect was better in patients without systemic complications including systemic hypertension, cerebral infarct,or diabetes mellitus. Visual acuity improved more in treated eyes with extensive macular edema than in control eyes with similar lesions. The findings show that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is effective in cases without systemic complications and in eyes with extensive macular edema.
