  • Look Inside

A 39-year-old woman presented with sudden visual field defect in her left eye. She had received artificial valve due to mitral valve insufficiency 15 years before. She had been under anticoagulants ever since. A total of 4 attacks of visual field defect occurred in the right or left eye during the past 15 years. The attack had been diagnosed with branch retinal artery occlusion(BRAO). When seen by us,her visual acuity was 1.5 in either eye. In her left eye,the retinal area irrigated by inferior temporal artery had become opaque and edematous. The finding was compatible with the diagnosis of BRAO. Pathological circulation was ruled out in her left eye by fluorescein angiography performed 10 hours after the attack. She had had recurrent attacks of migraine with visual disorders during the past 15 years. The observed BRAO appeared to be secondary to spasm of retinal arteries,or so-called retinal migraine.
