We evaluated the irrigating solution as related to bubble formation during phacoemulsification-aspiration. We used Opeguard(R) Neo-kit,a mock aqueous designed for intraocular surgery. Cataract surgery was performed on 37 eyes by setting the temperature of irrigating solution from 10 to 30 degrees℃ at 5-degree intervals. Bubble formation was classified into 3grades for statistical evaluation. Bubble formation was the greatest and interfered with the surgery when the temperature was set at 10 degrees. It became negligible at 15 degrees or over. In vitro experiment showed bubble formation to increase at lower temperatures. It appeared that irrigating solution kept at a low temperature would release dissolved air when it is oversaturated by becoming warmer during surgery. We advocate to store the irrigating solution at the temperature of 15 degrees or over.
