We treated 6 eyes of corneal perforation associated with stromal defect by transplantation of amniotic membrane using mattress suture. We employed a modified technique. A bundle of amniotic membrane is inserted onto the site of stromal defect. Another piece of amniotic membrane is then fixated to the corneal surface by mattress suture. In a case with large perforation,we initially placed full-thickness corneal suture to prevent displacement of amniotic membrane into the anterior chamber. Another amniotic membrane was then fixated onto the cornea. In 5 out of 6 eyes in the present series, corneal perforation was closed on the next day of surgery. In one eye with large perforation, leakage of the aqueous persisted until perforation was closed 16 days after surgery. Our modified method may be of value as it facilitates closure of corneal perforation including relatively large perforation.
