Background:The numbers of proximal femoral fracture patients in Japan have been increasing annually because of the aging of the population. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that affect the prognosis and the functional outcome of such patients.

Methods:We conducted a retrospective review of 74 patients 60 years of age or over who had undergone surgery for a proximal femoral fracture. The review period extended from April 2008 to March 2011.

Results:The one-year survival rate was 89.2%. The significant independent predictors of related to life expectancy were sex and walking ability at the time of discharge. Age and walking ability at the time of discharge were significant predictors of walking ability after discharge.

Conclusions:Walking ability at the time of discharge is the most important outcome predictor of the results of surgery for proximal femoral fractures in the elderly.
