We developed a new interlocking femoral nail named “Madonna”, made of high-nitrogen stainless steel (Autron-90). The nails 4-point bending strength is about 40% higher than that of conventional SUS316L stainless steel nails. Accordingly, we can safely use a thinner nail and perform minimal reaming, which allows early mobilization and early gait under full weight-bearing. The nail has R=1,600mm anterior curvature to conform to the anatomical shape of the femur. In order to insert the nail at the tip of the greater trochanter and avoid damaging of posterior column vessels, proximal portion of the nail is bent 8 degrees laterally (valgus). Because of additional interlocking holes to allow insertion lag screws into the femoral head at a 137 degree CCD angle, the nail is indicated for trochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures in addition to diaphyseal fractures.
