An epidemiologic investigation of the grip-and-release test was performed in 1,168 healthy volunteers. Age-related shifts in the normal range and the cutoff score were determined accoding to age group. Left-right differences in the test data and the repeatability of the test method were assessed. The results showed that the normal values decreased with age. The cutoff score was 24 cycles in the 4th decade, 23 in the 5th decade, 21 in the 6th decade, 17 in the 7th decade, 16 in the 8th decade and, 15 in the 9th decade. The cutoff score for left-right difference was 2 cycles. A left-right difference was found in about 40% of the cervical myelopathy patients. The method had sufficient repeatability when used to test both cervical myelopathy patients and healthy volunteers.
