Lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS) seems to be common in the elderly, but, there have been few reports on the relationship between LSCS and health-related QOL (HR-QOL) in the community. The Minami-Aizu Study was conducted on 1,862 people (largest number in the 8th decade of life) who agreed to participate and were interviewed. They accounted for approximately 21.5% of the local population. The subjects were evaluated for the presence of LSCS by means of a specially designed questionnaire. Short Form-36 (SF-36) (Japanese version) was used to evaluate of HR-QOL. The results showed that LSCS had a strong negative influence on HR-QOL in the community.
