It is important to recognize that prepared surgical fields are not sterile. Bacteria were detected on 6 of 10 grafted bones kept uncovered, 1 of 10 bones kept covered, in 8 of 10 surgical fields after the surgery, and in 2 of 10 surgical fields 30 minutes after preoperative disinfection with povidone iodine. Our procedure to make surgical fields more aseptic reduced the number of bacteria detected and improved the motivation of the operating room staff to prevent surgical site infection (SSI). Even if it has no evidence, continuing the procedure to make the surgical field more aseptic leads to the prevention of SSIs.
