  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A total of 130 elderly patients with hip fractures were studied retrospectively. Patient age averaged 84.1 years (range, 60-100 years) and the male-to-female ratio was one to three. The fracture was treated surgically in 83%of the patients. The in-hospital mortality rate was 8.5%. The causes of the in-hospital deaths were pneumonia (seven cases), sepsis (one case), cerebral hemorrhage (one case), hepatic failure (one case), and shock secondary to gastrointestinal bleeding (one case). The most important factors affecting life expectancy were hemoglobin level, dehydration, and preoperative medical condition. We conclude that preoperative medical condition is a useful indicator for predicting survival.
