  • Look Inside

A 47-year-old man complaining of pain in his left hip joint was referred to our hospital on September 2002. He had firstly noticed the pain in December 2000. Plain radiographs showed an osteolytic lesion in the left pelvis. CT-guided biopsy was performed in the outpatient clinic, and the histological diagnosis was grade Ⅱ chondrosarcoma. Bone scintigraphy showed increased uptake in the left pelvis, the left 6th rib, and the right frontal bone, suggesting metastases. Wide resection followed by total hip replacement was performed for the pelvic chondrosarcoma. Excisional and incisional biopsy were performed for the rib lesion and the frontal bone lesion, respectively. The histological diagnosis of the rib lesion was fibrous dysplasia, and the frontal bone lesion proved to be a xanthoma. Bone scintigraphy should be performed together with other examinations, such as MRI, to make a definite diagnosis of bone metastases.
