Disc electrophoresis on acrylamide gel was carried out on cerebrospinal fluid protein of 100 samples taken from 50 cases of brain tumor. The results were concluded as follow.
1) The electrophoretic pattern revealed the dis-turbance of blood cerebrospinal fluid barrier in 58% which consisted of mixed type 21%, albumin type 26%, m+a type 3% and prealbumin decreased type 8%. Another electrophoretic patterns were 13% in γ-globulin type, 2% in prealbumin increased type, 5% in concentration type, 5% in miscellaneous type and 15% in normal type.
2) Abnormality of the electrophoresis were as follow from severe to slight grade. ① acoustic neurinoma in cerebellopontine region, ② gliomaadhered and invaded into the meninges, ③ menin-gioma, ④ craniopharyngioma in hypothalamic region, ⑤ glioma invaded into or in ventricle ⑥ glioma included in cerebral parenchyma.
3) Electrophoretic abnormality was somewhat higher in the cases of malignant glioblastoma than in the cases of benign astrocytoma in the cerebral. In the gliomas in the cerebral parenchyma, electro-phoretic abnormality was highly demonstrated in the glioma adhered or invaded into the meninges and was moderately demonstrated in the glioma into or in the ventricle and also was slightly found in the glioma included in cerebral parenchyma.
4) No distinct correlation was found between the appearance of abnormal electrophoresis and the size of tumor. The abnormality of electrophoresis was lower in the cases of capsulated tumor than in the those of the tumor with cystic formation and also was somewhat lower in the postoperative cases than in the pre-operative cases.
5) It was shortly discussed that the electropho-retic abnormality has in particular been concerned with the relationship between the anatomical site of the lesion and the C.S.F. pathway system rather than the nature of tumors.
