Time intervals of epileptic discharges in human EEGs were analyzed. The subjects were 4 patients of various diseases showing "periodic discharges"in EEG with relatively regular intervals, and 3 epilepticus showing epileptic discharges with ir-regular intervals. The intervals of 60 to 300 con-secutive discharges were measured manually. The interval histograms were plotted and the cumulative distribution curves were also written. There were, at least, two different types of"periodic dis-charges".

The first type of periodic discharges was seen in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, for example, and single repetitive spike or sharp waves occurred at an interval of about 0.5 to 2 sec. The interval histograms of this type, however, did not neces-sarily show a normal distribution but a skewed one towards longer interval direction. In a clinical course of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, it was observed that the interval of discharges changed to be longer and irregular. Cortical lesion primarily was sup-posed for producing this type of periodic patterns.

The second type was seen in the subacute sclero-sing panencephalitis ("SSPE") and the EEG showed bilaterally synchronous, periodic bursts consisted of sharp and slow waves. The time intervals were about 3 to 8 sec. The time interval histograms of this type showed normal distribution curves and in a clinical course the pattern of this distribution remained stable. The mechanisms for producing this type of periodic discharges were discussed in terms of the thalamus or the upper brain-stem.
