  • Look Inside

Correlation between the kindled seizure suscepti-bility and brain monoamine levels was investigatedin the hippocampal and amygdaloid kindled cats.

Increase of interictal discharge (HD) frequencyand morphological change of IID into self-sustaineddischarge appeared following reserpine adminis-tration. α-MPT also increased the HD frequency. These changes in reserpine- and α-MPT-treatedcats were suppressed completely by the adminis-tration of L-DOPA, suggesting that depletion of norepinephrine and dopamine exacerbate the kindledseizure susceptibility. In a second experiment, theassay study of brain catecholamine showed signi-ficant and parallel depletion of both norepinephrineand dopamine in the hippocampal kindled cat brain. It is concluded that catecholamine may play an in-hibitory role in the establishment and neuro-humoral control of the kindled seizure susceptibility.
