  • Look Inside

This investigation was intended to study brain monoamine metabolism in the hypothyroid rat.

The results obtained were as follows :

1) Propylthiouracil-treated, hypothyroid rats gain-ed less weight than normal control rats, and ap-peared to be somewhat sluggish and irritable.

2) The levels of brain norepinephrine and sero-tonin in hypothyroid rats were slightly higher than in normal control rats and the increase of nore-pinephrine was statistically significant in telence-phalon and mesenbephalon plus pons plus medulla oblongata areas.

3) When received an electric shock of 2m Aonce every 10 sec for 60 min to feet, brain norepinephrine levels in normal control rats decreased significantly in diencephalon and mesencephalon plus pons me-dulla oblongata areas, while brain serotonin levels were not changed, and serotonin levels in hypo-thyroid rats increased significantly in mesencephalon plus pons medulla oblongata area without any change of brain norepinephrine levels.

4) The levels of brain monoamine oxidase activity in hypothyroid rats slightly decreased, but statis-tically insignificant.
