  • Look Inside

An experimental approach to new treatment of hydrocephalus was designed by means of stereotaxic cryogenic destruction of the choroid plexus. A liquid CO2 probe inserted to the posterior horn of lateral ventricle was use to freeze the choroid plexus of normal cat. Under the procedure, EEG and vital signs were recorded by polygraphic technique. The alteration in production of cerebrospinal fluid was mesured by modified Flexner & Winter's method.

1) According to electron microscopic finding, 70% of the plexus was destructed in the same side of inserted probe and marked edema of the plexus was observed in the other side by application of frozen effect during 7 to 10 minutes.

2) Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) productivity was markedly decreased (about 10% of pre-frozen sta-tus) and hyperproduction of CSF caused by infussion of hypotonic solusion could not detective follow-ing cryogenic destruction of the choroid plexus.

3) There is no alteration of frequency of the cortical EEG and hippocampal activity during and after cryogenic lesion, except decrease amplitude of both activities with correlation of the local tem-perature.

4) Serious changes of vital signs were never ob-served in the all experimental animals. According to comparison between the temperature gradient and the choroidal destrction, the cryogenic effect upon the choroid plexus might produced not only local frozen effect, but also ishemic effect upon the anterior and posterior choroidal artery. It is con-cluded that the stereotaxic cryogenic destruction of the choroid plexus might be used as a new treat-ment of hydrocephalus.
