  • Look Inside

Gonadotropin urine was estimated in 17 normal subjects (7 males and 10 females including 2 aged women over climacteric period) and 31 patients with nervous and related diseases (19 with brain tumors, 10 with other nervous diseases, 1 panhypopitui-tarism and 1 malignant tumor of the adrenal cortex). Biological assay of caolin absorbed urine precipitate on the increase rate in weight of mouse uterus (Matsushima's method) was employed in all the experiments.

As results, the following findings were obtained:

1) Normal range of gonadotropin content in urine was calculated as 6-24 units per day in males. The value in grown-up females showed variations within the range of 3 to 24 units per day in connection with their menstrual cycles and amounted to a much as 96-192 units in post-climacteric stage.

2) In case of brain tumors urinary excretion of gonadotropin varied with the site of the tumors. (i) The hormone content was so markedly reduced in tumors in or near the diencephalon as not to be detectable by the above method in 3 out of 5 cases examined. (ii) In cases with hypophyseal tumors, some showed extremely high and others equally low values according to the tumors. (iii) Normal values were obtained in most cases with tumors in either the cerebral hemisphe-res or the cerebellum.

3) In nervous diseases no remarkable change was observed in gonadotropin content except in one case of myotonia dystrophica in which gonadotropin could not be found at any examination.

4) The hormone in urine showed great in-crease over normal in adrenocortical tumor but almost vanished in panhypoituitarism.
