We reported last year that two main symptoms of Parkinsonism, namely, rigi-dity and tremor, could be markedly impro-ved by the Procaine-Oil blocking of the globus pallidus. This procedure is a part of our stereotaxic operation on the globus pallidus for the treatment of the hyper-kinetic disorders, the summarizing report of which will be communicated in Acta Psychiatria et Neurologia Japonica. Thetotal number of the operated cases for Parkinsonism is, at present, thirty-five. In this short paper, we will try to suggest some interpretation on the relationship of the globus pallidus to muscular rigidity in Parkinsonism.
It is the opinion of these authors that there is a little doubt as to the correctness of the prevailing theories on the function of the globus pallidus in hyperkinetic mo-vement, especially as seen in the Parkin-sonian tremor. It goes without sayingthat we do not expect to reach a final conclusion or formulate a new theory of our own on this problem, but we do expect to suggest certain new concepts based on our studies which may be helpful as a basis for further investiga-tion.
