In the current study, we developed the 16-item Negative Symptom Assessment scale (NSA-16) in Japanese and investigated its validity and reliability. To investigate reliability, intra-rater consistency and inter-rater consistency were examined by calculating the corresponding intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs). The resulting intra-rater and inter-rater ICCs indicated high consistency, respectively. To investigate validity, the correlation between the NSA-16 total score and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) negative scale score was examined and a high correlation was observed. These results demonstrate the reliability and validity of the NSA-16 in Japanese and suggest its usefulness as a rating instrument for the negative symptoms of schizophrenia.
