We investigated cases of long-term hospitalization among patients with mental disorders and criminal records with the objective of identifying factors hindering the reintegration of these patients into society. Our analysis focused on persistent problematic behavior and the current symptoms of 13 psychiatric patients with criminal records who had been hospitalized for ≥10 years. Based on the results, the patients were characterized as either having many problematic behaviors without severe psychiatric symptoms (n=1), with serious psychiatric symptoms (n=9), and those whose reintegration was hindered because of inadequate support systems for social reintegration, rather than harmful behaviors towards others or symptom severity (n=3). Patients with serious psychiatric symptoms were classified as having recurrences of positive symptoms (n=5) amidst prevailing negative symptoms (n=4), and the presence of serious psychiatric symptoms was the most common characteristic in the present patients.
