The main objectives of this study are to examine on the relationship between costs and reimbursements for acute psychiatric inpatient care, in order to provide an empirical evidence for the current debate on reimbursement rates for psychiatric care. We interviewed psychiatrists, nurses, and psychiatric social workers (PSW) employed at psychiatric hospitals in three different locations. Our findings are as follows:(1) for patients requiring intensive acute psychiatric care, such as seclusion, financial loss was observed on the first day of hospitalization all three hospitals;and (2) the inpatient care significantly varied even among similar acute psychiatric hospitals. These results contribute to the discussion on the schedule medical fee revision that proposes more intensive care input at the early stage of psychiatric inpatient care.
