We studied 39 patients who were diagnosed with anxiety disorder on the basis of the DSM-Ⅳ-TR criteria. Of these patients, 20 fulfilled the criteria for pseudoneurotic schizophrenia reported by Hoch and were assigned to the pseudoneurotic schizophrenia (PS) group;the other 19 patients were assigned to the anxiety disorder (AD) group. In addition, 19 patients with schizophrenia (SZ) and 20 normal subjects were assigned to form 2 age-matched control groups. For all the 4 groups, we analyzed the responses of the patients to a Rorschach test. The mean Rorschach schizophrenia score for the PS group was more similar to the score of the SZ group than to that of the AD group. On the other hand, the score for the PS group differed from that of the SZ group in that a number of delta scores and forms were inaccurate for almost all the items, and detailed responses were provided for only a few items. Our results indicate the potential use of the Rorschach test in distinguishing patients who have been diagnosed with anxiety disorder and have a background of schizophrenia and that a sub-group of patients with anxiety disorder may require a different treatment strategy.
