We retroactively studied 31 cases of depression for which milnacipran was given, in order to inbestigate withdrawal symptoms and the duration of remission after stoppong the drug. All of the patients consented to participate in the study (16 by direct interview, 15 by indirect interview by telephone). None had withdrawal symptoms, but 4 (12.9%) experienced a relapse of depression. Of the 27 (87.1%) patients who had a long-term period of remission, 83.5% remained in remission at 5 years after stopping milnacipran. Withdrawal of symptoms and the duration of remission are key issues for patients wishing to live independently. We consider that the present results are important for physicians considering patient mintenance with milnacipran.
