We evaluated effects of 28% oxygen administration on mixed venous oxygenation and pulmonary hemo-dynamics in 38 cases of chronic pulmonary diseases with hypoxemia. Before oxygen administration, par-tial pressure of mixed venous oxygen (PvO2) were above 35 mmHg in 8 cases and below 35 mmHg in 30 cases. In the latter 30 cases, PvO2 after oxygen administration were above 35 mmHg in 19 cases (group A) and below 35 mmHg in 11 cases (group B). In group A, PvO2 increased from 32.5±2.4 to 37.6= 1.4 mmHg, PaO2 increased from 55.4±5.2 to 83.4-15.9 mmHg and coefficient of oxygen delivery (COD) increased from 3.49±0.41 to 3.76±0.50 after oxygen administration but other hemodynamic data did not change significantly. Also in group B, PvO2 and PaO2 increased significantly (29.4=4. 0 to 32.5=2.8 mmHg, 49.7±8.5 to 68.9=15.5 mmHg respectively) but COD remaind unchanged (3.26=0.36 to 3.27± 0.36) and cardiac index decreased from 2. 98=0.45 to 2.60=0.77 //min・m2. PvO2 after oxygen administra-tion could not be predicted by arterial gasometry. The reason of insufficient increase of PvO2 and un-changed COD in group B seemed to be decreased cardiac output after oxygen administration.
