Summary

To investigate the characteristics of mycobacterium infection, we evaluated the classification in patients who consulted the Nishibeppu National Hospital during the period 2000 to 2002. All sputum specimens were tested by smears and by the culture method for mycobacteria. Fluorochrome and Ziehl-Neelsen stain were adopted for the smear method. Liquid media(MGIT) and solid media(Lo¨wenstein-Jensen) were adopted for the culture method.

There are molecular methods that have been developed to identify the type of mycobacteria and detect drug resistance.

About sixty percent showed tuberculosis and about forty percent showed nontuberculous mycobacteria(NTM). The frequency of tuberculosis has been increasing. Among the nontuberculous cases, MAC(Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex) with eighty percent, is the most frequently found.
