The incidence of Barrett's esophageal adenocarcinoma has increased not only in the Western countries but also in Japan. The prognosis after endoscopic treatment for superficial Barrett's esophageal adenocarcinoma has been reported to be good. Therefore, the surveillance of Barrett's esophageal adenocarcinoma is important to detect cancer at an earlier and potentially curable stage. In the Western countries, some guidelines recommend endoscopic surveillance once every two to five years, but no surveillance strategy has been proposed in the official Japanese guideline. However, it has been reported in Japan that the novel adenocarcinoma's incidence rate in patients with LSBE(long-segment Barrett's esophagus)is similar to the values reported in the Western countries. Thus, surveillance for LSBE is needed in Japan. Hopefully, a surveillance strategy for Barrett's esophageal adenocarcinoma will be established in the near future in Japan.
