  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Introduced here is the present status of non-surgical methods of hemorrhage control, now strikingly improved, in patients with massive bleeding from the upper digestive tract. An outlook for their prospect of future state is also made.

These methods are : endoscopic electrocoagulation under direct view; endoscopic laser coagulation under direct view; endoscopic control of bleeding with clips under direct view; and selective injection of medicament into mesenteric arteries. Also included is a treatment procedure for esophageal hemorrhage due to varices by injecting hardening substances. The present status of laser coagulation is especially described in details.

In patients with massive hemorrhage from the upper digestive tract, non-surgical control of bleeding could most desirably performed only when those methods are studied beforehand for a long time. There is much room for future improvement methodologically too. However, as these methods are being improved rapidly, they hold out a very bright prosect.
