  • Look Inside

Since the initial reports by Ribbert (1893) and Kelynak (1893) diverticulum of the appendix has been described considerably often in the U. S. A. and Europe. However, in Japan its report has been rare. A case of it recently encountered is therefore presented here.

Intestinal diverticulum was first classified by Meckel (1832) into true and false ones. In 1961 Evert-Suarez and Noteboom reported that the greater majority of appendiceal diverticulum belong to false one and genuine diverticulum is seen only in a very small number. The case presented here also belongs to false one. Even if some cases have been left out, divetriculum of the appendix is still of rare occurrence considering vast amount of appendectomy cases.

Genuine diverticulum of the appendix, mostly single, usually originates owing to abnomal development on the other side of the inferior ileocecal fold. The case in this paper also belonging to false diverticulum is of interest because it can be classified as true one by its site of origination. False diverticulum is often found in the mesenteric border.

No difference has been found either in age or sex distribution. Appendiceal diverticulum is always less than 1cm in diameter. Its shape is mostly hemispheric like a mushroom. It occurs either singly or in groups.

Some reference has been made to its literature.
