As a new diagnostic procedure in gallbladder diseases, the clinical usefullness of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) has been investigated. In polypoid lesion of the gallbladder, cholesterol polyp was demonstrated as typical three patterns from the internal echo of EUS. On the other hand, adenoma or adenomyoma has produced a solid echo including low or anechoic spot. Therefore, differential diagnosis between adenomaand cholesterol polyps could be made by EUS.

Furthermore, the structural characteristics of the three layers of the gallbladder wall were clarified by comparing the findings obtained by EUS with those obtained in the histologl calexamination of resected gallbladder.

It was concluded that EUS would be expected to be the best nonoperative diagnostic method to detect polypoid or flat type early cancer of the gallbladder.
