The frequency of gastric cancer is very high in Hungary. In the fight against gastric cancer a complex screening and Welfare Centre was organized by the authors, and the main objectives and results of this work are referred.

The atrophic gastritis and/or intestinal metaplasia, gastric polyp, gastric ulcer are considered by the authors to be the precursory states of gastric carcinoma. In the first place the functional properties and frequency of atrophic gastritis and intestinalization are discussed. A “high risk” group of 694 patients with these lesions are controlled, and the last four years it this group 7 cancer cases could have been detected, 5 of them in early stage.

In the second part of the study the possibilities of gastric cancer mass survey in Hungary are acquainted. A mass screening of a normal population (1534 individuals) was performed by the authors, based on the lactic acid dehydrogenase activity determination in the gastric juice. 7 cancer caces (4.56 per thousand) were detected, including 3 cases in early stage.

With the practical application of complex check-up methods the ratio of early gastric cancer cases could have been increased to 12.5 per cent of total gastric cancer cases, in the region of authors.
