  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Recently actinomycosis has decreased in frequency, because actinomyces is sensitive to antibiotics and sulfa drugs. But at present we still encounter the actinomycosis.

Abdominal actinomycosis rarely occurs as a visceral disease and only about 10 reports of patients with intramural gastric actinomycosis have been published. Clinically findings in a typical patient often suggest gastric carcinoma.

We have described a case of gastric actinomycosis and studied clinicopathological review of the past literature. Our case was a 53 years old Japanese male. X-ray and endoscopic examination suggested scirrhous carcinoma or submucosal tumor in the great curvature of the antrum.

At laparotomy we found the tumor mass involving stomach, omentum and transverse colon. Pathological examination of the resected specimen revealed actinomycotic abscess in the muscular layers of the stomach. Generally abdominal actinomycosis occurs as an intraperitoneal abscess following appendecitis or perforation of a gastroduodenal ulcer. In our case, however, we could find neither ulcerative change, nor scar on the gastric mucosa. The patient, given penicillin for 2 weeks, progressed satisfactorily and at present, about 3 years after operation, the patient is well.
