  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A rare case of reticulum cell sarcoma of the stomach is reported. Preoperative diagnosis was multiple Ⅱc type early cancer, but histologic study of the resected stomach revealed reticulum cell sarcoma confined mostly in the mucosa with partial invasion to the submucosa. Reactive lymphoreticular hyperplasia was prominent around the tumor.

The patient, a man 44 years of age, had been medically managed from time to time for more than 10 years for intractable ulcer of the stomach. As the pain in the epigastrium did not completely subside, he was admitted to the hospital for complete workup. Finally gastric resection was done including extirpation of 3 regional lymphnode group. It was reticulum cell sarcoma with metastases only to the lymphnodes surrounding the abdominal arteries. Reactive lymphoreticular hyperplasia of high degree seen in these lymphnodes suggested their malignant transformation.

In spite of histologic changes suggesting origin of the tumor in the stomach and curative resection, the patient died 4 months after surgery of recurrence of reticulum cell sarcoma involving the lymphnodes throughout the body. This is the 10th report of early reticulum cell sarcoma of the stomach in the Japanese literature.
