Since the discovery of H. pylori, the ideas about and classification of gastritis have changed dramatically. However, a variety of H. pylori-unrelated gastric mucosal lesions still exist, such as 1) Gastritis-related lesions: acute and chronic gastritis, special forms of gastritis (reflux gastritis, chemical and drug-induced gastritis, granulomatous gastritis, infectious gastritis, eosinophilic gastritis, collagenous gastritis), 2) Tumor-like lesions (hypertrophic gastritis, fundic gland polyp/polyposis, special forms of polyposis), 3) Others (vascular disorder, irradiation or anti-cancer-drug-induced gastritis, amyloidosis, graft-versus-host disease).

It is necessary to elucidate, in future, the effect which H. pylori has on aggravation/remission and malignant transformation of each of these lesions. Therefore, it is important first to understand these histologic features.
