Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to provide disaster prevention education for municipal public health nurses through virtual reality( VR) simulations of tsunami experiences. It also sought to clarify the effects of education on protective motives.

Methods: Disaster prevention education was delivered through group discussions and VR images created by researchers. Data were collected before and after the program using the Pictorial Representation of Illness and Self Measure (PRISM), the Disaster Self-Efficacy Scale, and a selfadministered questionnaire. The effects on perceptions of reward, probability of occurrence, severity, self-efficacy, and reaction costs were analyzed using χ2 and Wilcoxon tests.

Results: A comparison of the two groups before and after the VR program, conducted with nine municipal public health nurses, showed significant differences in compensation, effectiveness, and selfefficacy.

Discussion: The VR program enhanced municipal public health nurses’ positive perceptions of external rewards and improved self-efficacy. The program’s effectiveness lies in its combination of VR-based disaster education and group discussions, which facilitated the consideration of countermeasures based on prior experiences.
