A qualitative exploratory study was conducted on eighteen married couples who had experienced perinatal loss; the purpose of the study was to describe the developmental process of the family after the death. During the study period from April 2004, to April 2008, interviews were conducted 18 couples. Using the constant comparative method of analysis on GT approach, categories were drawn from the data and were then pull together through theoretical links to direct future analysis of the data. Human subject approval was obtained from the committee on human research at belonging the University.

There were three categories after the death.

【The couples each face the grim reality】

In this phase, four subcategories for men and four subcategories for women were identified in which they have to individually cope with the death of their child.

【The couples struggle to understand each other】

Three subcategories were delineated in which they interact with each other and strive to overcome a grim life event while deepening mutual understanding despite occasional conflicts.

【The growth period of the married couple's subsystem】

In this phase, the family structure changed; they were able to live their life with the deceased child without strain or hardship.

The findings of this study will help shed light on the experience parents who suffered perinatal loss may go through, how they eventually overcome it, and through what kinds of interactions.
