Ⅰ．緒言

　1911年にAllen^2）が定量的な脊髄損傷の実験方法を報告して以来，この方法が現在にいたるまで広く用いられている^1,9,34,36）．同時に脊髄損傷を多面的に研究するために多数の実験方法が考案されている^{7,14,15,20,21,25,26,30,31,33,43,44,47,48）}．また特殊な治療法^{3,19,45,46）}に脊髄の損傷が合併して発生する場合もあると報告されている．最近Allenのweight-dropping techniqueの欠点が指摘され^{10,23,34,41,44）}，いわゆるAllenの方法を用いている研究者の実験結果の不一致の原因が検討されている^18,29）．

　重症の脊髄損傷の発症のmechanismとしては，頸椎においてはflexion injuryまたはhyperextension injuryに伴うluxation,dislocationまたはfracture-dislocationが重要視されており，腰椎においても類似の損傷および椎体の圧迫骨折などが指摘されている．胸椎は，胸郭の一部を形成しているという解剖学的な関係のため，過剰な屈曲や伸展運動が起こりにくく，胸椎の損傷は，脊柱の長軸方向に加わる外力によるか，または個々の胸椎に直接作用する外力によって起こる．

Experimental spine and spinal cord injuries were induced in dogs by dropping a 3 kg weight through a guide tube from a two meter height onto the surgically exposed and stabilized 3rd and 4th cervical spines. Skeletal specimens were examined, and the site and extent of fractures were compared with systemic and neurological signs of spinalcord injuries.

Five animals died immediately after injury and another one was found dead the next morning. Out of three survivals that recovered from traumatic shock, two became quadriplegic. Two other animals showed quadriparesis and paraparesis, respectively.
