ニューロトロフィンは従来知られていた神経細胞の分化，突起伸張や生存と云った長期的作用の他に，シナプス伝達の増強，シナプス長期増強の促進，さらにはシナプス長期抑圧の阻止などの急性の作用を持つことが最近明らかとなった。本稿では，ニューロトロフィンの中でも研究がとくに進展している脳由来神経栄養因子（Brain-derived neurotrophic factor：BDNF）に焦点を当て，海馬や大脳皮質視覚野のシナプスに対する作用やそのメカニズム，さらにはその生理的意義に関する最近の知見を紹介した。

Neurotrophins, the family of nerve growth factor (NGF), have been considered to play roles in the differentiation, neurite outgrowth and survival of developing neurons and maintenance of a certain group of matured neurons. In addition to these well-known functions, accumulating evidence from recent studies indicates that theneurotrophins are involved in a more rapid change in synaptic transmission in the central and peripheral nervoussystems.
