筋疾患におけるアポトーシスの関与について，とくに縁取り空胞（RV）に注目してわれわれの得た知見を紹介した。高頻度にRVを伴う筋疾患，すなわちMarinesco-Sjögren症候群，縁取り空胞型遠位型ミオパチー，眼咽頭型筋ジストロフィー，眼咽頭遠位型ミオパチー，還元小体ミオパチーや，やはりRVを伴った先天性ミオパチー症例で，その病態生理にアポトーシスが関与することが示唆された。

また，これらの筋疾患ではアポトーシスを生じた筋核の支配領域のみが，リソソーム系により自己貪食されることによりRVが生じるのではないかと推測した。

Several muscular disorders have been reported to be related to apoptosis, however there are arguments both pro and con. Among these myopathies, Marinesco-Sjogren syndrome shows little necrotic and regenerating process, and is characterized by rimmed vacuole (RV) formation in its muscle pathology. In addition, there are marked myonuclear changes consisting of chromatin condensation, some of which have DNA fragmentation demonstrated by TUNEL method in this syndrome. From these findings, there is no doubt that apoptotic mechanisms play a major role in the pathogenesis of this syndrome.
