  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Prefrontal lesions characteristically impaired performance of memory tasks in which subjects are required to evaluate and screen the contents retrieved from memory. Participation of the prefrontal cortex in memory retrieval was suggested by a clinical study of an epileptic patient who had callosal commissurotomy. The actual top-down signal from the frontal lobe was detected in the inferior temporal cortex of posterior-split monkeys during performance of a visual associative memory task. Human neuro-imaging studies also suggested participation of the prefrontal cortex in memory processing, showing activation of prefrontal areas during performance of a variety of memory tasks. Moreover, it is hypothesized that some anatomically distinct regions in the prefrontal cortex have specific memory function. Recently, a human functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI)study was performed using feeling-of-knowing(FOK), which is considered to be yielded from a metamemory system(metamemory refers to knowledge about one's memory capabilities and knowledge about efficient strategies for memory usage). In the imaging study, FOK-related activations were found in left dorsolateral, left anterior, bilateral inferior and medial prefrontal cortices. Investigation into metamemory could be a key to understand more about memory processing in the prefrontal cortex. In future, promising animal studies on metamemory, such as macaque fMRI study using an FOK task analog or electrophysiological study at single neuron level, are expected to be challenged.
