この論文は，これまで発表されている論文の形式と別種なものであって，わが国としてはかなり特異なものだと思っている．というわけは，執筆者名をみて気付かれた方も多いと思うが，2つの大学の教室の症例を持ち寄って，まとめあげ，それについて臨床的な解析を加えたものだからである．かねがね，川井と竹本は，わが国の1教室の症例数では，国際学会において，全く勝負にならないことを話し合っていた．思いきって，わが「胃と腸」誌で，新しい試みをしてみたわけである．周到な打ち合わせを重ねたわけではないので，成功なのか失敗なのか自信はない．
型どおりの書き出しになってしまうが，1966年Marstonら1)が大腸の虚血性病変をischemic colitisと総称して以来，虚血性大腸炎は主に欧米を中心として研究がすすめられ，その疾患概念および臨床像は，まだまだ曖昧さを残しているが，現状ではある程度明らかになってきたと言えよう．
Chiefly clinical analysis has been made of 45 patients with ischemic colitis.
(1) Transient type accounted for 68.9 per cent of them. Stricture type was seen in eight patients; gangrene type in two.
(2) Most of the lesions were seen in the left side of the colon, especially sigmoid and descending colon.
(3) The age of the patients varied from fifties to sixties, the mean age being 58.0 years. There was no sex difference.
(4) Complications that could possibly have influenced the occurrence of this disease were seen in 23 patients (48.9 per cent).
(5) Chief symptoms of this disease were sudden onset of abdominal pain, diarrhea or melena.
(6) Characteristic features of this disease in barium enema examination are thumb printing, local spasm and sacculation.
(7) Colonoscopically, characteristics of this disease are either longitudinal ulcer or erosions.
