Sleep and anesthesia are fundamentally different phenomena, as sleep is a physiological process regulated by circadian rhythms and homeostasis, while anesthesia is a state induced by sedative drugs to suppress consciousness prior to invasive medical procedures. Despite these differences, sleep and anesthesia share similarities, such as their effects on specific brain regions, the alteration of consciousness, and amnesia. This review explores the commonalities between sleep and anesthesia from the perspective of sleep medicine, focusing on the “borderland” between anesthesia and sleep. We also discuss methods such as drug-induced sleep endoscopy(DISE)and research on dreams and memory during anesthesia, highlighting both the similarities and differences between sleep and anesthesia. The integration of sleep medicine and anesthesiology could lead to the development of new treatments and theories. Collaborations among experts in both fields of study, bringing together diverse perspectives, is anticipated to contribute to the overall advances in medicine.
