Kinesins are molecular motors that move along microtubules and function primarily in intracellular transport.

It is known that(i)the NR2B subunit of the NMDA receptor, which is involved in chronic pain, is transported to the synapse by KIF17(a member of the kinesin-2 family), and(ii)the TRPV1 receptor, which is involved in thermal hyperalgesia, is also transported to the synapse by KIF13B(a member of the kinesin-3 family). If the movement of kinesins can be modulated, it may therefore be possible to indirectly suppress the expression of receptors involved in pain, and kinesins have thus attracted attention in recent years as a new target for drug discovery and treatment.

It has recently been reported that propofol inhibits the movement of kinesins, raising expectations for the possibility of treating chronic pain with an anesthetic drug.
